Watching us Wait

Description
We had to wait for the ferry at Crawford Bay BC, and this beautiful Osprey eyed everyone very carefully while we sat and drank a coffee at the picnic table. This is a Western Osprey, aka, Sea Hawk, River Hawk and Fish Hawk. They feed primarily on fish, but have also been known to hunt rodents, rabbits, reptiles and even other birds. When fishing, they soar up high, and dive to a tasty swimmer easily because they have nostrils that close when they hit the water! Amazingly, its outer toes are reversible to better grasp whatever they catch. Osprey are birds that live almost worldwide, and from Canada they winter in South America. On return in the spring, they will go back to the same nest and redecorate for the new season. Romantically they mate for life. The nest is usually made using sticks, driftwood, turf or seaweed. Very structurally sound, their nest obviously suits their needs for many years. The West Kootenay village of Crawford Bay offers artisan shopping, such as brooms, jewellery, forge made items, weaving, pottery and a host of other creative pursuits. The famous Kokanee Springs Golf Resort always seems to be filled with delighted golfers, enjoying the beautiful course and scenery. The ferry itself is a toll free ferry, that is the marine link to the BC Highway system. The Osprey sat there for quite a while, watching us while we watched him. I was glad that he seemed to pose while I raised my camera. The haze is from the BC Wildfires.
